Dining With The Doctor: The Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook

I’m holding a copy in my hand now. After a year of work, I can hardly believe it’s real. The last month in particular has been a crazy whirlwind of editing, formatting, additional food photography, and most of all, learning how to make a photo filled book on CreateSpace. I hope my fellow Whovians like it. This is the first Doctor Who cookbook since 1985. Over the last year, I’ve watched and rewatched the first six seasons of the new series multiple times, watching for any food related details. In case you’re wondering, there really weren’t many. I’ve tried my…

Wherein I punch the walls of reality with my mighty geek cred

The guys at Punching the Walls of Reality invited me over for a night of pizza and podcasting. How could I say no to people with handles like Promethus and Agamemnon? I was ready to recreate some old school battles on their coffee table, but they did a good job keeping me firmly grounded in the future. At some point, I need to give them a copy of Dan Simmon’s Illium. If you need something new to listen to on your commute, this is worth it just for the tentacle porn references, though there’s also plenty of talk about everything…

Tesla for Kids!

Tesla for Kids!

The incredibly talented Vicktoria Riley and I were shocked to discover there aren’t any children’s books about Nikola Tesla. Seriously? Well. We clearly had to do something about that. We’ve spent the last six months working on Counting With Tesla, our picture book for little geeks. It’s important to nerd them up right. They’ll get to meet Nikola Tesla, find out who some of his friends and enemies were, and learn about his impressive scientific achievements, all in terms an elementary school student can understand. It’s a great book for pulling your budding young geek into your lap and reading…

SteamDrunks in Print!

Gosh. That was easier than I expected. For those of you who don’t know, CreateSpace is a Print on Demand company owned by Amazon. The individually printed books cost a little more, but there’s no upfront printing cost, no need for warehousing, no shipping issues. Basically, an indie writer like myself can get everything set up for the cost of the cover and a $25 fee at CreateSpace. I’m in love. In fact, I honestly can’t see any reason why my future books shouldn’t come out in both print and ebook editions from now on. If you don’t have…

I’ve moved across country 10 times. So Can You.

In the last four years I’ve moved from Louisville to Chicago to St. Louis and now to Austin. Every now and then, I go where opportunity takes me. At this point, I’ve got a pretty cheap, manageable system in place. If you’ve convinced yourself you could find a better job, relationship, or community in another city, by all means go. Seriously. It’s easier than you think, and in this short, 10,000 word guide, I do my best to hold your hand and walk you through the basics.

What if there was a reason for Edison’s feud with Tesla?

What if there was a reason for Edison’s feud with Tesla?

Sometimes I put down the booze in favor of writing some short stories. Between my admittedly awesome gig with The Austin Post and work on some longer books coming up this fall, I haven’t had a lot of time for fiction lately. It feels good to make the time anyway. This short story fell almost fully formed into my head on a recent afternoon. What if there was a darn good reason for the way Edison treated Tesla? Pick it up on Amazon for one possible answer.

Beyond Brisket: Modern Kosher Cooking

Awhile back I had a kosher cooking blog. Eventually, crazy hate mail, aggressive comment spam, and eventual threats from PETA led me to take it down.  One of the great things about publishing on Amazon is they’ll delete comments if the person posting them starts making death threats or crazy rabid suggestions. I’m thrilled I can offer the recipes I collected without having to deal with hundreds of crazy emails from angry nutjobs who have serious issues with Jews. The recipes aren’t as snarktastic as my newer, geekier cooking and cocktail books, but they are pretty darn tasty alternatives to…

Drink Up, Trubies

That’s right! I’m back with yet another cocktail book. Much like SteamDrunks, The Unauthorized True Blood Drinking Guide is an indulgent stroll through history with a side of snark. I explore the drinking culture when each one of your favorite vampires was still alive then offer you a theme cocktail based on something they might have enjoyed before they were turned. True Blood was a great excuse for me to enjoy another round of historical research while also giving me plenty of excuses to rewatch episodes of one of my favorite shows. If you’re planning a watch party for the…

Ghostwriting

As you’ve no doubt noticed, I’m a bit whorish when it comes to promoting my own work. Why else would I have spent Q1 writing about booze and sex? So far my goal for 2012 has been liquoring you up before introducing you to a girl who wants you to dip your fish fingers into her custard. In case I’m being too subtle – go buy my geek books about drinking and dating. Meanwhile, in order to pay the rent, I’ve quietly landed some ghostwriting gigs. I find the stuff I’m writing about utterly fascinating, but due to very understandable…
