You know, it's funny: I found your website when I was looking up things to do in St. Louis because I'd just moved from Texas. I love this post. It is so true. Try telling AT&T or some other cell phone company (or any company that verifies your address before accepting it) that your address is FM 1797..

"Uhhh, what's FM?"
"Farm to Market road."
"Huh?"
"Try FR 1797, that's Farm Road.."
"..... None of these things are being accepted in the system.. Let me get an override.."

So much fun. It's definitely a different experience than living in other states. I miss Texas, but I don't necessarily miss the driving/weird street address part. <3 Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay there... other than the lovely driving part.

Oh, I cannot thank you enough for posting this one. I just signed a lease on an apt in the Highlands AND I have a profile on OKCupid. You may have saved me as I might have swilled a martini or two and then been in up to my neck with this crazy sucker.

Star, I think the real secret behind *all* of my First Contact posts is that people always believe they're the exception. They see one thing on your profile they like (say, science fiction fan or boardgames, in my case) and decide to ignore everything they don't like (liberal, Jewish, not poly). The thing they like is your one immutable quality while the things they don't are all flexible minor issues they believe they can change.

I think it's a symptom of the overall flaws in online dating. People send out dozens of messages to people they think are perfect for them and never hear back. Then they start emailing the B list. If they don't hear back from any of them, they keep straying further and further from people they're compatible with in the hopes that someone will finally reply, and when they do, that person is temporarily their one and only. This has led to guys assuming that since I agreed to meet them for coffee, I'm now their girlfriend, even though we don't have anything in common.

Tina, I've had the same thing happen to me. Guys never believe "no married men" applies to them.

Laura, in Louisville, I had a lot of Christian guys want to convert me as soon as they saw I was Jewish. In St. Louis, a lot of poly guys think that means I'm their next conquest because I define myself as a geek.
