This is your excuse to get out of the house and mingle with your own kind. Enjoy. Our nearest Renn Faire starts to the east while Firefly guests descend on a convetion to the north. Meanwhile, here in Austin there are plenty of fun things coming up at the Alamo Drafthouse. However, this week’s secret stealth event is the Sci Fi and Fantasy Social. It only…

South City Gaming at Mokabes The St. Louis Boardgames Meetup is one of this city’s little known geek treasures. These friendly, laid back people take over a different section of town every week, but their monthly south city meetings draw the biggest crowd with a regular turnout of over 50 people. If there’s a game you’re dying to play, feel free to bring it, but rest assured that there is never a lack of diversity…

It’s odd to see a strip mall parking lot overflowing with cars on a beautiful Saturday. Step inside the Fantasy Shop in St. Charles and the serene summer weather gives way to a loud hum of enthusiastic voices. At one table, people ask if anyone has wood for sheep. At another, half a dozen calm people suddenly point foam-gun silhouettes at one another’s heads then break into giggles. Everyone is hopped up on the seemingly limitless variety of sugary snacks. “This is amazing,” said Jennifer Keith, a visitor from Missoula, MT. Keith and her husband play board games at home…

Consular

My own personal console wars just heated up. Y’see, there are only two people in my household. We own a PS2 and a Wii. Gaming consoles shouldn’t outnumber familiy members. But while I do love my Wiimote something fierce, the X-Box 360 lures me with, of all things, live action boardgames. Yes, I run a boardgames club. Technically, I can play Settlers of Cataan, Carcassonne, or Lost Cities against real live human beings. Ah, but with the X-Box 360, I could play those games naked at 3 in the morning without any risk of arrest. It feels so wrong, but…
