New to Austin: Week 21 – Wherein I proudly release the first volume in my dating trilogy

Blame Chris Hardwick. This year Santa brought me a 104 degree fever for Christmas. I was equally fascinated by the  four inch tall goats frolicing in my delivery Chinese food and the Doctor Who marathon on the BBC when my blue box fantasies were interrupted by The Nerdist TV Special. Craig Ferguson was as entertaining as ever. The goats and I agreed Matt Smith did a mediocre job trying to fool us into believing he’s not actually a floppy limbed alien in an ill fitting human suit. And then Chris Hardwick innocently bitched about not being able to find a…

Geek Girl’s Guide to Austin: Feb 7-13

Get out of the house, geeks! Once a week I round up the steampunk, boardgames, science fiction, burlesque, and other random bits of geeky awesome which make Austin such a great place to live. This is your excuse to get out of the house and mingle with your own kind. Enjoy. Our nearest Renn Faire starts to the east while Firefly guests descend on a convetion to the north. Meanwhile, here in Austin there are plenty of fun things coming up at the Alamo Drafthouse. However, this week’s secret stealth event is the Sci Fi and Fantasy Social. It only…

Magic? The Gathering of Site Traffic

I was working on my next 22 First Dates blog when my inbox exploded with frantic messages asking if I’d seen The Gawker Post. They warned. They predicted. They worried. This chick will make you look crazy. She’ll drive all the good geeks away from dating sites. She’s the kind of nut who wants to create a freakish national geek registry only Sarah Palin could love. Oh, my. That’s pretty dire consequences for a mostly unknown site. They’re wrong, of course. Gizmodo’s “My Brief OK Cupid Affair with a World Champion Magic the Gathering Player” is absolutely brilliant viral marketing.…

Veronica Hart

Jane Hamilton, better known as adult actress Veronica Hart, said she was a high school nerd. Therefore,  it’s no surprise the outspoken advocate of human sexuality was one of the guests at Contamination 2011, a horror, science fiction and cult convention at the St. Louis Westport Sheraton Chalet. You can read my interview with this fun, charming lady here.

Daniel Wilson, author of Robopocalypse

Some boardgames are deadly

It’s odd to see a strip mall parking lot overflowing with cars on a beautiful Saturday. Step inside the Fantasy Shop in St. Charles and the serene summer weather gives way to a loud hum of enthusiastic voices. At one table, people ask if anyone has wood for sheep. At another, half a dozen calm people suddenly point foam-gun silhouettes at one another’s heads then break into giggles. Everyone is hopped up on the seemingly limitless variety of sugary snacks. “This is amazing,” said Jennifer Keith, a visitor from Missoula, MT. Keith and her husband play board games at home…
