Together alone

Everyone knows dating is hard. People exchange emails and chats for weeks on sites like Match.com or OK Cupid without ever meeting because the women are terrified the men are secretly married serial killers. That’s okay, the men are also afraid the “women” they’re talking to are actually male serial killers. If they can get past the worry their bodies will be found in a dumpster, then there’s the fear that the photos were taken in the 1990’s or they’re not really a surfing astrophysicist who loves cats. The alternative to online dating is a bold and daring concept called…

The all seeing eye watches you BBQ

Summer is the season when we prove our dominion over the animals by grilling and eating them. It’s awesome. Getting your friends together for a big barbecue is great, but sometimes you want to throw a big grill party without your clumsy friend accidentally breaking your favorite chair or that guy from college clogging the toilet. To heck with people’s obsession with getting together indoors! You don’t have to clean your apartment in order to throw a great party. Instead, get some paper plates, trash bags, charcoal, beer and beef, then tell your friends where to meet you. It’s grilling…

A Taste of Chicago in St. Louis

Nothing says Chicago like a hot, wet Italian Beef sandwich.

Long before drive-thru’s were invented, corner shops in Chicago dished out fast, hot, hand-held meals that still resembled actual food. Chicago expats and fans of the city are familiar with the glorious trifecta: hot dogs, Italian beef and gyros. Don’t be fooled by the Sonic ads promising you a Chicago-style hotdog. Real Chicago dogs are made from Vienna Beef, also known as the blessed afterlife of cows. You can argue good cows are turned into steaks, but until you’ve waited outdoors in blistering -10 degree weather for a train that’s already ten minutes late with nothing to warm you but…

Five Summer Camps to Make Grownups Jealous

Spy Camp makes you wish you were still a kid

It’s bad enough that grownups don’t get summer vacation. These days, while you spend your summer staring forlornly out the tiny window across from your cubicle, you can’t even pity kids sent off to the horrors of camp. Once upon a time, camp meant macaroni crafts, leaky canoes and golfball sized mosquito bites. These days, camp means simulated space missions, learning to be a secret agent and building robot minions. Either someone is on a mission to engineer a future evil genius bent on world domination, or being a kid is a heck of a lot cooler now than it…

Derby isn't just about hats

Mint Juleps, majestic hats and minor bankruptcy… that’s right, the first Saturday of every May heralds a century old ritual of betting and bourbon as the entire country suddenly remembers there are gentrified people in Kentucky who enjoy good dentition and designer shoes. Louisville may be more than four hours away, but there are plenty of places in St. Louis ready to celebrate the Kentucky Derby this Saturday. If your heart is with the crazy infield party, you can visit the mouse races at 90 Degrees West while if you’re more in the mood for formal dress and a dramatic…

William and Kate Royal Wedding Teabags

Sometimes I drive from downtown to St. Charles conducting interviews and taking photos for a detailed Metromix article. Other times, they let me write things like this. Looking at Kate and Wills weird wedding memorabilia is like preparing for a trashy date. Get ready with some commemorative lipgloss, share a couple Kiss Me Kate Beers, stagger back to a hotel room to use some royal condoms, then clean up with some commemorative hand sanitizer. Check out my roundup of the weirdest items cashing in on the royal wedding.

Sushi in the Suburbs

"Oh my god" roll from Tani

For this Metromix article I visited seven sushi restaurants spread across the St. Louis suburbs.  Take a look behind the sushi bar at Blue Ocean Sushi (University City), Drunken Fish (Maryland Heights), Hokkaido (Florissant), Nippon Tei (Ballwin), Tani (Clayton), Sushi Ai (Maryland Heights) and Wasabi (Clayton) . Blue Ocean surprised the heck out of me. Most of the restaurants were a little dubious about a random reporter wandering in and photographing their sushi chefs at work. Blue Ocean took it as a challenge. The owner asked about my favorite sushi roll. I honestly told him so far, I found sushi…
