Fright Night

Once a week Chris-Rachael Oseland shares her cinematic guilty secrets by shining a ray of improbable love on the movies. This week we promised she could dress as a Dalek for Halloween if she watched Fright Night. In the classic words of Cracked.com, some time in the last decade people stopped wanting to slay vampires and started wanting to brush their fingers across a vampire’s glistening torso. No. Vampires are monsters. They’re not supposed to sparkle. They’re supposed to be scary predators who will taunt you psychologically before turning you into a screaming late night snack. That’s what makes the new Fright…

Pass the Popcorn: The Adjustment Bureau

The Adjustment Bureau

Once a week Chris-Rachael Oseland shares her cinematic guilty secrets by shining a ray of improbable love on the movies. This week we gave her a mysterious ancient key and a dapper new fedora then sent her out to watch The Adjustment Bureau. The Adjustment Bureau combines two things I normally adore – the paranoia of Phillip K. Dick and the screen chemistry of Matt Damon. When I heard about this movie I nearly wet myself with glee. I pictured Jason Bourne with even more justifiable paranoia. Otherworldly forces would pull his life into a confusing trainwreck as he lost…

Cowboys and Aliens

Once a week Chris-Rachael Oseland shares her cinematic guilty secrets by shining a ray of improbable love on the movies. This week we promised she could wear her fedora and whip around the office if she watched Cowboys and Aliens. I have to make a confession. I’m a secret fan of science fiction westerns. Wild Wild West, Tremors IV, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. Give a man a hat a vest and a gun and you have my attention. So it’s no big surprise I enjoyed the heck out of Cowboys and Aliens. It might as well be subtitled “James…

Rango

Once a week Chris-Rachael Oseland shares her cinematic guilty secrets by shining a ray of improbable love on the movies. This week we took away her pirate hat and sent her out to watch Johnny Depp’s latest movie. Buy Rango. Okay, that’s a short review. Maybe I should go into more detail. This is hands down the best animated movie I’ve had the pleasure of watching. I may be biased by the fact that I’m over the age of 9. You can find plenty of grownup cartoons on late night television, but Hollywood isn’t typically in the business of making…

Once a week Chris-Rachael Oseland shares her cinematic guilty secrets by shining a ray of improbable love on the movies. This week we promised not to send her an N’Sync CD if she sawFriends With Benefits. Movies happen in pairs. One year we had two men unexpectedly living life on television withThe Truman Show and Ed TV. Another year we were treated to equally good Victorian costume dramas about magicians with The Illusionist and The Prestige. This year we get a pair of romantic comedies about attractive young people who try to forgo relationships in favor of friendly sex with No Strings Attached and Friends…

Horrible Bosses

Once a week Chris-Rachael Oseland shares her cinematic guilty secrets by shining a ray of improbable love on the movies. This week we took away her steak knives and sent her to see Horrible Bosses. I have a guilty secret for you. I laughed my butt off in a movie about racism, sexual harassment, and changing definitions of masculinity. That’s right. I saw “Horrible Bosses” this weekend. Read my review at OK Cheers!

Pass the Popcorn: Easy A

Easy-A-pic2

Once a week Chris-Rachael Oseland shares her cinematic guilty secrets by shining a ray of improbable love on the movies. This week we made her stay after class to watch Easy A. I wish I could live in the witty world of a good teen comedy. Sure, the dialogue is unrealistic, but imagine what life would be like if you always had the perfect, snappy comeback. Easy A exists in the same parallel universe as Juno. The parents are loving, the children are clever, and the dialogue is sparkling. Read my full review here.
