22 First Dates: The Salesman

Tani-01

After people’s reactions to Officer Creepy I wanted to offer you an example of a perfectly harmless but utterly doomed date. Neither of us was remotely attracted to the other, but by god we were each determined to win at dating. I normally offered guys their choice of ritual C Class Beverage: Coffee or Cocktails. Every now and then a guy said he’d rather meet for dinner. On those occasions I took them to Dragon King’s Daughter, my favorite fusion sushi restaurant in Louisville. The waitresses knew me by name. Whenever my dates went to the bathroom, they’d post one…

Fujiyama's SpicyTuna Roll rocked my raw fish world

In one corner stands Kitaro, strong, massive and as well known as Godzilla. In the other stands Fujiyama, a smaller, less well known underdog. The two of them dominate the sushi scene in O’Fallon like giant rubber monsters dominate downtown Tokyo. Your humble restaurant reviewer battled them both to learn their secret weaknesses and discover which contender was the strongest. Read more here.

Kitaro Serves Sloppy Sushi

Kitaro had a nice rendition of miso soup

The waitress started off by asking if my lunch companion and I would like to try their home infused saki. I could see a batch of ginseng soaking on the sushi bar, so we tried one rather experimental shot with ginseng and a pineapple infused saki to follow it up. The pineapple was delightful. It made me want to try every fruit flavor on the menu. The ginsing, on the other hand, was interesting. I hesitate to say good, because as we sipped it, we kept staring into the glass thinking this tasted too medicinal, yet we kept coming back…

The small portion of tempura was appreciated

When he saw me coming up the parking lot, a man tucked his cellphone in his pocket and told his son to get away from the giant inflatable panda. Sushi Ai opened a second location in St. Charles, and any kid who likes Japanese animation is going to fall in love with inflatable bear on the sidewalk. I gave Dad a wink and offered to take a photo of them both. Inside, the adorable larger-than-life animations give way to a tastefully decorated sushi bar. The open interior is functionally divided into three more intimate dining areas by rows of leafy…

Fujiyama's Spicy Tuna Rolls are some of the best in St. Louis

Nothing says light summer fare like sushi. We’ve let O’Fallon’s barbecue and Indian restaurants battle it out for best cuisine, now it’s time to sample our Japanese offerings. We started this month’s sushi battle at Fujiyama. Strip mall restaurants get a bad reputation as generic pits of bland anonymity. However, a lot of the best hole in the walls are located right next to a dry cleaner or a Radio Shack. Sometimes, a small family restaurant just wants to save a little on rent while being close enough to existing businesses to bring in customers. Fujiyama may not look like…

"Oh my god" roll from Tani

For this Metromix article I visited seven sushi restaurants spread across the St. Louis suburbs.  Take a look behind the sushi bar at Blue Ocean Sushi (University City), Drunken Fish (Maryland Heights), Hokkaido (Florissant), Nippon Tei (Ballwin), Tani (Clayton), Sushi Ai (Maryland Heights) and Wasabi (Clayton) . Blue Ocean surprised the heck out of me. Most of the restaurants were a little dubious about a random reporter wandering in and photographing their sushi chefs at work. Blue Ocean took it as a challenge. The owner asked about my favorite sushi roll. I honestly told him so far, I found sushi…
